Learning to read in Gurap village…
Did you know that through your generosity and compassion, God is meeting the needs of hundreds of men, women and children in Northeast India?
Tailoring training centers have been established in six different villages. Women (many of whom are Hindu) are being taught how to sew, and learning skills that will help them become seamstresses. This is a valuable tool which they can use to start a business that will generate income for their families, a key factor in raising them out of poverty.
Adult literacy programs have been established by the GTN India staff members in various parts of NE India. Adult literacy in India is only 61% (World Christian Database), and according to the CIA’s World Factbook, literacy rates for Indian men are almost 20% higher than literacy rates for women.
Two weeks ago, Sindhu and Minnie visited one of GTN’s literacy programs in Orissa, where fifteen women have been part of the program for the last year. The picture above shows Minnie Pani assisting in teaching the women of Gurap village who have been attending the Literacy Training Center for the last 11 months. Sindhu had the following report:
“Yesterday, Minnie and I visited Gurap village, where we have an Adult Literacy Center. 15 women come to learn on a regular basis, and we were amazed to see their progress. Praise the Lord for His provisions. Minnie shared her testimony, because some of the ladies asked her why she doesn’t have the red marks over her head, no bangles on hands, etc. (traditional customs for Hindu women). So Minnie had an opportunity to share how Jesus saved her Mom and Dad from a staunch Hindu family. Jesus the only Eternal Life Giver, peace giver, had done miracles in her family which led Minnie’s Mom to belief in Christ, even though she was a devout Hindu. As a result, 12 of her children are now serving the Lord; all of them accepted the Lord Jesus. The village ladies were very happy, became friendly with Minnie, and they asked her to come back.”
